Headin' north

With the 'Valley' and the Gulf in our rear view mirror we headed north from Galveston. We met a lot of 'Winter Texans' from all parts of the country while we were here. Everybody was in southern Texas for one reason...escape the cold and snow back home. Some of us had no winter back home but it sure was nice not to have to get out the mittens, snow boots and other snow related items.

We left Jamaica Beach RV Park and headed to the Port Bolivar Ferry. The ferry leaves the northern part of Galveston Island and lands at Port Bolivar. The ferry crosses the main shipping channel that goes into Houston. There was plenty of shipping activity this morning, more than average according to a deck hand on the ferry.

Uh, who's in charge here?

We landed at Port Bolivar after a short 25 minute trip. We eventually headed north on State Hwy 96 and the first stop is San Augustine. There is a lot of early Texas history in this town. There are 13 historic cemeteries, 5 houses on the National Register of Historic Places, 8 historic churches and the list goes on. The RV park we are at is on the site of an old Mission...Mission Nuestra Senora De Los Delores. Established back in 1716 by Padre Fray Antonio Margil De Jesus. The park is run by the City of St Augustine and has 32 level sites FHU, paved streets and sites and plenty of trees.
