Lake Okeechobee

A slow travel day today. We are spending the night in South Bay, Fl. It is located at the southern tip of Lake Okeechobee. It's the largest freshwater lake in Florida and the seventh largest in the U.S. It covers approximately 730 square miles. It has an average depth of only nine feet (think of a full sheet of plywood and add a foot). The lake is surrounded by a 20' high dike built by the Corps of Engineers in 1928. A hurricane caused major flooding and deaths and destruction.

We are waiting to see how much rain Hurricane Paula brings to south Florida before we head to Hallandale Beach.
