Hundreds of mustangs at one time roamed the island and nobody knows how or when they became residents. The island has the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Corpus Christi Bay on the other and protects the mainland from hurricanes. It consists of 3954 acres and is about five miles long.
The park has 48 sites with water and electric (30/50 amp) and a dump station. There are also 300 sites available for camping on the beach with permit.
