The RV jacks hit the ground and the tires hit the pavement next week. It's hard to believe that we arrived here in Harlingen, TX at the end of October. We've actually been on the road since the middle of October. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years have flown by. Spring is just around the corner. Some of the cacti are already in bloom, trees are starting to flower, should be a nice drive up the Gulf coast.
Our first stop is Goose Island State Park in Rockport, TX. The park has one of the oldest oak trees in the state if not the country. It is guess-timated to be over 1000 years old. The Park has a 600' long fishing pier and with that, no fishing license is needed to wet a line.
Galveston Island is the next stop. The island was devastated by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Ike was the 2nd costliest hurricane to ever make landfall. The state park as well as some other RV parks have been rebuilt. Downtown Galveston has a 19th century historic district with shopping and dining. We plan on taking the (free) vehicle ferry from the north end of the island to Port Bolivar and avoiding the traffic in and around Houston. Port Arthur is the last stop in Texas and the it's off to Cajun' country.
Stay tuned.....
