Located in Brownsville and opened in 1971. It was one of the first zoos in the country with no barred cages. Most of the animals are displayed in settings resembling their own natural habitats. There are about 337 species of animals and over 200 species of plants. The zoo is divided into four geographic areas, Africa, Asia, Tropical America and Indo-Australia. There is also a free flight aviary, aquatic wing, herpetarium and bear grottos.
These two young Orangutans watched us walk up to the railing and sauntered over to the edge of their moat and watched us as we watched them. A couple of hams if there ever was. One of the orangutans was born without an arm but it looks like he/she has adapted well.
