Silver Bay

Some of the more popular tourist stops on the way to Silver Bay are closed due to the state shutdown. Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse are closed but the public can still park along side the road and walk in.

In 1994 Silver Creek Tunnel was opened as part of an 18 year $104 million project to upgrade Hwy 61. The finished tunnel size is 46' wide by 31' high. The total project was $23.6 million.

In 1945 Reserve Mining began acquiring land near Beaver Bay for housing for mine workers.
In 1954 the 'Beaver Bay housing project' was renamed Silver Bay.

On the way back to the campground we stopped for lunch at Bettie's Pies. Betty started in 1956 making donuts and coffee for the fisherman. In 1958 she turned it into Betty's Cafe and added pies to the menu. In 1974 after some expansions and other changes she re-named it Bettie's Pies. Today, over 300 pies are made daily.
