The Mississippi riverfront is the oldest part of Minneapolis dating back to the mid 1800s. St Anthony Falls provided power for the lumber and flour industries. Minneapolis led flour production for nearly 50 years. Changes in transportation and the industry moved business away from the river.
The Stone Arch Bridge was built in 1883 by James J Hill, lumber baron. It was built for $650,000, a cost unheard of in those days. It has 21 stone arches, 2100 feet long, 28 feet wide and clearance of 24 feet. It was a working bridge until 1965. Restoration began in 1980 and is now used for pedestrian traffic. The bridge is adjacent to St. Anthony Lock & Dam maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers.
