Amana Colonies, IA.

The Germans settled here in 1855 fleeing persecution and economic depression in Germany. Six villages were established a mile or two apart on some 26,000 acres. Property and resources were shared. Men and women were assigned jobs by their village council. Farming and wool production supported the community but other enterprises were added. Well crafted products became a hallmark of the Amanas.

In 1965 the Colonies were declared a National Historic Landmark and attracted thousands of visitors every year.

The Amana Colonies are not to be confused with the Amish. Both settled here but have different traditions and religious beliefs. There are no interactions between the groups.

Grapes are grown here for several of the wineries and to add insulation to the sides of homes.
